Village Museum Roots by Land Tour The Roots by Land tour, organized by Happy Safari and GAM Group, begins early in the morning. Guests are picked up from their hotels around 7:00 AM and driven to Banjul, the capital city of The Gambia, which is located on an island. From Banjul, we take a ferry across the river to Barra. Upon arrival, we drive through a number of local villages a route to Juffureh and Albreda. In Albreda, we visit the museum dedicated to the Kunta Kinte Trail, where guests learn about the life of Kunta Kinte, as famously chronicled by author Alex Haley in his book Roots. From Albreda, we continue our journey to Kunta Kinte Island. There, guests witness the remains of the historical site where enslaved Africans were held before being transported. We share powerful stories about the Atlantic slave trade — how people were captured from the hinterlands of The Gambia, brought to the island, then sent to Gorée Island, and eventually shipped to the Americas and England. After exploring the island, we return to Juffureh village to meet the Alkalo (village chief), who shares more about the history of Kunta Kinte and Alex Haley’s visit to trace his ancestry. Next, we stop at the Kunta Kinte Restaurant, where guests enjoy a delicious lunch featuring fresh seafood, traditional dishes, and refreshing cocktails. There's time to relax and unwind before we begin the journey back. We drive back through the villages to Barra, cross the ferry to Banjul, and finally return guests to their hotels — completing a powerful and memorable journey through history.

River Excursion – A Signature Experience by Happy Safari and GAM Group: Join us on one of our most popular adventures – the River Excursion, brought to you by Happy Safari and GAM Group. The day begins at 9:00 AM with hotel pickups across the coastal strip. Guests are transported to Banjul, where they board our comfortable riverboat for an unforgettable journey along the River Gambia. As the boat sets sail, guests are served a delicious breakfast while cruising toward the historic area known as "the Greeks." After breakfast, the adventure continues through the tranquil waters, offering fantastic opportunities for birdwatching and, with a bit of luck, dolphin sightings. Around 1:30 PM, a buffet-style lunch is served on board, featuring a variety of local and international dishes. After lunch, guests have the option to try their hand at fishing – rods and equipment are provided – or simply unwind on our sunbeds. For those looking to soak up the sun, we provide Gambian bamboo oil to help you achieve that perfect golden tan. Throughout the afternoon, enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the river, the songs of birds, and the calming breeze – the perfect setting for relaxation. Many guests affectionately call this the “lazy part” of the day, where you can truly switch off and enjoy nature at its finest. At approximately 4:30 PM, we begin our return journey to Banjul. Upon arrival, our drivers will take you back to your respective hotels. Tour Highlights: Hotel Pickup & Departure from Banjul Port The day begins with hotel pickups followed by a transfer to Banjul Port, where guests board a spacious riverboat, comfortably accommodating up to 150–200 passengers, depending on the day. River Cruise Experience As the boat sails through the tranquil waters of the River Gambia, guests enjoy refreshing breezes, birdwatching, and—on sunny days—the chance to spot dolphins playing in the river. Arrival at Juffureh & Albreda The boat docks at the historic villages of Juffureh and Albreda. CITY TOUR
The City Tour, provided by Happy Safari and GAM Group, is a flexible half-day experience that can be arranged according to the preferences of the guests. The tour begins with a hotel pickup, followed by a visit to the famous Crocodile Pool in Bakau. This sacred site is home to nearly 100 crocodiles, including the most well-known and friendly one, named Charlie. The pool is considered a place of spiritual blessing—many locals and visitors come to bathe here, particularly those seeking fertility. The site also features a small museum that shares the history of The Gambia, from independence to the present day. After exploring Bakau, we head to Banjul, the capital city. Our first stop is Arch 22, also known as the Freedom Arch. Built following the 1994 military coup, this national monument offers panoramic views of Banjul and the Atlantic Ocean from the top. There is also a café where visitors can relax and enjoy a refreshing drink. Next, we visit the bustling Banjul Market—one of the largest and most vibrant markets in the country. It attracts traders and buyers from across the sub-region, including Senegal, Mauritania, and Guinea Conakry. Here, guests can experience the local culture and shop for souvenirs, crafts, and fresh produce. From the market, we make a short stop at the Banjul Port to observe daily ferry activities between Banjul and Barra, a fascinating glimpse into local transportation. Finally, we leave the island city and drive back to the Kombos, returning guests to their hotels. This marks the end of the City Tour—an enriching journey through history, culture, and everyday life in The Gambia.
